BASS Convention: This Weekend!

Join us at BASS this weekend!!

Pastor Christiaan will be teaching two workshops:

Loopy Learning (Saturday at 12:45pm)
Kids today don't learn the way kids learned even 10 years ago! And, if we keep teaching them the way we have in the past, we're going to lose them. Come to this workshop to learn how to use the principles of "loopy learning" to capture kids' attention, keep them engaged, help them remember the lessons for years to come, nurture a love for God's Word, and strengthen their friendship with Jesus!

and

Why No One Volunteers Anymore and How to Change That! (Saturday at 8am)
Can't find enough volunteers? This all-new workshop for 2012 will give life to your ministry by finding the right volunteer for each service opportunity. This workshop will lead you through the LIFE process of finding, matching, and keeping great volunteers. Discover how to invite someone to volunteer in just 90 seconds! You'll learn how to create a magnetic culture by staffing your ministry with the right person for the right position. Let's make 2012 the year when you will finally have enough volunteers for your ministry!

Pastor Ryan will be teaching two workshops as well

Packing Their Chutes: giving Preteens a Faith for a Lifetime (Friday at 1:30)
Just when you thought you had kids figured out they morph into preteens - tweens - upper-elementary age kids! As they stand on the precipice of childhood, ready to take their leap into youth ministry, how can you be sure your preteens have what they need to not only survive, but also thrive? This workshop will help you understand what's going on in preteens' changing minds and bodies - and how to help them grow spiritually. You'll discover the top things kids this age want from you, the things you should never do or say, and the keys to ministry that'll keep kids coming back every week. Plus, we'll help you understand what preteens' parents are going through and how you can partner with them, too!

and

Five Cultural Threats to Your Kids' Faith (Friday at 3)
It's nothing new: the world is a hostile place for Christian kids to live in - always has been and always will be. The litany of threats include media, family breakdown, and childhood obesity. But those aren't the real threats to your kids' faith! In this workshop, you'll discover the things that could truly derail your kids' faith if you're not aware of them and don't counteract them. You may be surprised to learn which things are innocent and which are insidious.

TRU Storytelling ToolBox

The Big God Story impacts our lives by giving us an accurate and awe-inspiring perspective into how God has been moving throughout history. It’s the epic story we’ve been invited into!

During the Celebrate/Discover time, we have the privilege of telling stories—both personal and biblical. The reality is that it can sometimes be a challenge to engage a group of children, whether a group of 5 or a group of 500.

The following are super practical suggestions/resources for your storytellers to help them inspire kids:
• use emotion when storytelling; whether it’s fear, excitement, wonder, or awe, timely placed emotion engages listeners
• stand close to a squirrely child while you talk
• ask open-ended questions about how the people in the story responded or may have felt; then have the kids circle up and talk about it
• prompt the kids to show exaggerated facial expressions for how so-and-so might feel instead of just talking about it
• do call-and-response where the storyteller asks children to repeat a word or phrase every time she says a particular word or phrase
• throw in some spontaneous hand motions
• get the kids doing hand motions
• change the volume of your voice; everyone loves to hear a whisper
• put a “prop box” on stage full of fun items the storyteller can grab if he’s losing the kids, etc.
• as part of storytelling training, play theater games with your storytellers to help them feel more comfortable on stage

MORE THAN INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES

MORE THAN INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES

Why don’t Tru lessons have clear instructional objectives or a specific "take away"?

Much of today’s church curriculum tends to lean heavily on educational systems—where “learning” is measureable, and guides the teacher to evaluate effectiveness.

Tru has intentionally sought to lean more heavily on spiritual formation rather than education, while not abandoning the need for this generation to be well grounded in the knowledge and understanding of God and His Word. In the realm of spiritual formation, the teacher is the Holy Spirit and He chooses to instruct, convict, inspire, comfort, lead, and guide, when and as He chooses.

Tru allows for a time of response where the Holy Spirit can bring the child to a place of “how to apply” what has been learned, rather than a leader dictating, “now go do this ...”

While there are no concrete or even truly measurable objectives for each lesson, the objective is to provide an environment where God’s Word is taught, true to content and context; where kids investigate Scripture; and where God is put on display as the “main character” in every lesson.

While measurement is less structured, the times of storytelling on the Remember & Celebrate weekends, and from home life, prove that God is at work, creating a solid foundation for kids to hear God’s voice, desire to obey Him, and obey Him in the power of His Spirit.

HomeFront Weekly

3/4 year old Volunteers-

As each child leaves on Sunday please hand out the HomeFront Weekly. Encourage each family to go over together before the following Sunday. This tool is used to encourage family Bible time at home and prep the kids for the upcoming lesson.

Also, I will have stickers available for the kids who can save the Monthly Bible verse. Please be going over and over the Monthly verse during each service.
